The Government must respect the independence of business associations

The Foundation for the Rule of Law (FEDe. Colombia) rejects the pressure exerted by the national Government and its allies on the internal decisions of business associations. The election of their representatives belongs to their members, in accordance with their bylaws, and cannot be conditioned by the political preferences of the Executive. Article 39 of the Political Constitution expressly provides that "workers and employers have the right to form unions or associations without State intervention." It also provides that the internal structure and operation of social and business organizations must be subject to the legal order and to democratic principles.
